Water Recycling on the International Space Station

ISS international space station above EarthGoing into space takes a lot of forethought. Astronauts may seem super human, but the fact of the matter is they need the same things everyday people need. That includes water. The International Space Station is a completely closed system that needs to be able to operate without outside interference. It would be very hard to deliver necessities to the station on a regular basis, especially things that are constantly used, like water.

The International Space Station's Closed-Loop System

According to NASA, there is a closed-loop system on the International Space Station that is completely dedicated to recycling water. Astronauts capture wastewater, even the moisture from breathing can be captured. The contaminants and impurities are filtered out, resulting in potable water. This water is used for food rehydration, bathing, or drinking. Recycled water is actually often cleaner than most of the fresh water people ordinarily drink.

The Importance of Recycling Water on Earth

Water recycling is something that can help the planet achieve sustainability, since less than 2% of Earth's water supply is fresh water. The potable water on the planet is limited, and recycled water is something future generations are going to need to rely on. Using recycled water to irrigate landscapes, flush toilets and in other areas will help to sustain the supply of potable water for drinking, cooking, and other necessary uses.
